Job Description
Field Interviewers are responsible for:
- Traveling frequently to selected locations to recruit selected respondents
- Making in-person and phone contact to locate respondents aged 58-96 to discuss the study, answer questions, and obtain participation
- Making in-person and phone contact with selected respondents to avert and convert refusals to participate
- Collecting confidential information and administering standardized questionnaires via phone and in-person lasting up to 150 minutes per interview
- Independently managing administrative duties, including participating in conference calls and completing online and in-person trainings
- Transmitting data as scheduled
- Administering cognitive assessments (e.g., animal naming test, word recall, and counting backwards)
- Administering physical function testings using dynamometer (hand-held device)
- Providing verbal instructions to respondents for self-collection of whole dried blood spots using a small device and assisting when needed. Linked here is an informational video regarding this process: Dried Blood Collection Tasso, Inc.
- Providing verbal instructions to respondents for self-collection of saliva using an Oragene Saliva Kit and assisting when needed
- Ensuring proper storage, handling, packaging, and shipping of bio-specimens (TASSO device and Oragene tube) according to project protocols
- Managing and storing paper documents
- Clearly and concisely documenting all efforts to contact and interview respondents at the end of each workday
- Maintaining regular access to a reliable wireless internet connection in your home for project work
- Meeting weekly with supervisor via Zoom
- Assuming full and legal responsibility for use and care of project-issued equipment
- Managing and securing any participant incentives, issued equipment, or project materials against damage, loss, or theft
- Safeguarding any participant incentives, issued equipment, or project materials against damage, loss, or theft
- Assuming responsibility for and carefully tracking all participant incentives
- Submitting timely and accurate Time & Expense reports
- Virtually attend scheduled meetings with other members of the project team
Requirements:
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years old at the time of employment
- Must possess High School Diploma or GED
- Comfortable with the following:
- visible blood in the collection device. Interviewers will not draw blood themselves
- viewing, handling, packaging and shipping bio-specimens (TASSO device and Oragene tube)
- wearing a mask/gloves during the blood and saliva portion of the in-person visit
- asking survey questions on personally sensitive subject matters
- Possess effective communication skills through speech and listening
- Fluency in English through reading, writing, and speaking
- Available for entire training and data collection period
- Able to successfully complete training (self-guided, virtual, and in-person)
- Must have a valid driver's license and reliable personal automobile available for business use
- Comfortable using RTI issued laptop and other associated equipment
- Access to password-protected Wi-Fi connection for data transmissions and administrative responsibilities
- Able to keep project information confidential
- Willingness to work in various types of weather conditions and after dark
- Willing to work weekday daytime hours with flexibility for some work in the evenings and weekends as dictated by case requirements.
- Able to adjust schedule to interview respondents when they are available
- Must be proficient in the use of issued laptop when administering interview components
- Position involves physical demands of carrying, lifting, and climbing stairs. Physical effort includes supplies and equipment up to 20lbs
- Demonstrate effective organizational and communication skills
- In order to travel by air, federal law requires individuals have REAL ID or an acceptable alternative. This position may require the successful candidate to travel by air for business reasons. Accordingly, successful candidates must have, or be willing to obtain, a REAL ID, or TSA approved alternative
Preferred Qualifications for Ideal Candidates
- Two years' experience conducting in-person interviews
- Prior experience working on a Add Health Study or on other surveys that involved in-person interviewing of participants about personally sensitive subject matters
- Available for occasional overnight travel
- Positive, self-motivated, curious, and enjoy interacting with people from culturally-diverse backgrounds
- Effective time, schedule, and workload management skills to meet set deadlines
- Computer skills, namely email and internet proficiency
- Be comfortable working in unfamiliar areas
